Open Lines prepared A guide to undertaking strategic assessments under the EPBC Act for the Commonwealth Department of the Environment. You can view the guide on the Department’s website.
What we did
We worked closely with the Department of Environment to develop a guide that clearly explained the strategic assessment process under the EPBC Act. It was seen as a critical tool for helping potential strategic assessment partners (and the public) to understand how the process works and what outcomes it can deliver.
We developed the guide using the legislation as a starting point. But we also used information from State and Territory Governments around Australia with experience in the process, and information arising out of a number of workshops with the Commonwealth.
Key elements of our approach were to present the information as simply and plainly as possible, ensure that it was technically and legally accurate, address key questions that the public often raised, and present ideas and concepts in a variety of forms.
The guide explains the EPBC Act strategic assessment process and walks through:
- An introduction to national environment law and strategic assessments
- The environmental and planning outcomes that can be achieved
- The strategic assessment process
- The necessary ingredients for a successful strategic assessment
- The fundamentals that need to be in place to conduct the assessment
The guide has been sent all around Australia and has received great feedback.
